If I read one more author who professes to have the 'secrets to success,' I think I will vomit. If there is any secret, it is that there are no secrets. Success in any endeavor, walk of life, career or relationship is the result of many factors, and not one of these is scribbled on the wall of some tomb hidden deep in the desert or jungle.
Success means different things to each of us. To some, it is the size of their bank balance, to others it is nurturing relationships. To many, a hot meal and roof over their heads and to others, fame. I am not going to give you my definition of success. It works for me, but you might laugh or snicker at my simplicity. I am not going to preach to you that you should desire success or even celebrate it. What gives me the right$%: I will only tell you that I believe no one has the right to define others' success by their personal definition of it.
So, what are these so-called secrets$%: Don't have a clue. I am searching for them just like the rest of you. Then, Tim, what's the point of this weeks tip$%: Relax, I can only type 20 words a minute.
Copys
I prefer to call them fundamentals rather than secrets. I could give you a list of all of the traits, attitudes, outlooks, and behaviors of successful people, but I have done that in a previous tip. Suffice it to say that the fundamentals are just that, fundamentals. What makes them work again and again, as people chase wealth, status, happiness, achievement, power, and ego gratification, as well as peace, harmony, joy, balance, freedom, and wisdom, is that these fundamentals are available to each of us.
I would like to put them into three categories:
:%$middot; Who you have been.
Recent copys:
:%$middot; Who you are.
:%$middot; Who you are becoming.
I know what some of you are thinking - I don't get it!
Who you have been - your conditioning, experiences, failures, accomplishments,
cultural background, role models and lessons.
Who you are - your philosophy, attitudes, frustrations, needs, beliefs, expectations, opinions, values and sense of self.
Who you are becoming - your hopes, goals, agendas, outlook, dreams, desires, fantasies, and insights.
I know some of my speaker/author friends, as well as some of you who may be practicing counseling professionals, may not like my simplification of the concept of success. Doesn't matter, it is mine.
I have also heard it said more times than I can remember: success is not a destination, it is a journey. Boy, if that isn't a general simplification that helps all of us!
